Description

Girl silhouette with trident

Captured in Vienna on 02.09.2021 — one week before Russia began positioning troops again near the Ukrainian border.
What you see:
A silhouette of a young girl, around 5–7 years old, standing still before a dark wall. Her posture is calm, her head gently tilted forward.
To her left, painted in red graffiti on the wall, is the Ukrainian Tryzub (trident) — the national coat of arms of Ukraine. A centuries-old symbol of freedom, independence, and resistance.
Over half the image is intentionally consumed by deep black.
Under very specific lighting conditions, one might spot a faint smiley face to the left of the trident. It is nearly invisible.
Artist intention/interpretation:
Captured in this photograph is a tale of resilience, seen in the silhouette of a young girl standing before a shadow that is more than just black—it’s a void symbolizing the emptiness of war.
Her small figure, head tilted slightly forward but unafraid, faces the darkness. To her left, a red trident—Ukraine’s emblem of freedom and hope—is sprayed on the wall. Its vivid red hue cutting through the gloom and reflecting a nation’s enduring spirit amid conflict.
Over half of the frame is swallowed by inky blackness, a deliberate choice representing the fear and uncertainty that shroud Europe in times of geopolitical crisis. This darkness embodies the dread of conflict spreading across the continent.
The girl stands at the threshold of this “dark side,” suggesting an approaching threat and echoing the collective unease felt in Ukraine and beyond.
This frozen moment captures the collision of innocence and adversity. The girl becomes a symbol of Europe’s shared consciousness—caught between familiar safety and an unknown future. In her quiet stance and the defiant trident beside her, this image tells a story of courage, fear, and unyielding hope even in the darkest times.
